English Drama: The strange case of Dr Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde

Last 25th of March we were able to attend an English play sponsored by the APAP and coordinated by the English Department. The play was actually performed by two actors from Madrid, one from Malaga and another one from Uruguay. They represented the famous novella written by Robert Louis Stevenson, “The strange case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde”.

The scenery was divided in two parts of Dr. Jekyll´s house, the living room and his laboratory. All the components of the scenery were brought by the cast as their costumes, that were set in the epoch XIX Century. Throughout the play there were some scenes in which we could see musical aspects, the characters singing and dancing, but basically, the novel was about the mental condition of Dr. Jekyll which is called “split personality” so sometimes he was one person and suddenly, he was another, Mr Hyde, with a violent behaviour.

This will become a problem for both personalities because each one had an intimate relationship with two different women. One of them was Dr. Andersons´ niece who was going to get married to Dr. Jekyll and the other one was a lady Mr.Hyde had met. Both women met each other and they finally found out the problem with the two personalities of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The two lovers will end up dying because of the aggressive behaviour of Mr. Hyde, although Dr. Jekyll would never have done something like that. Charlotte, the woman who worked for Dr. Jekyll tried to save him and separate him from Mr. Hyde by giving him a medicine but finally Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde died.

Watching this play was a great opportunity for us because we could see the English language in action, outside of our normal English classes: The performance, pronunciation and singing. All these features made it an amazing play.
